For her exhibition, Stitch, Ruth Tabancay continues her exploration of fiber techniques and of fabric manipulation. With a knitting machine, she creates lengths of tubing for a site-specific installation,Knit. What’s In and On Your Body is a further expansion of her series of embroidery set into Petri dishes. Fissility II evolves from previous work with stitched metallized Tyvek. Additional embroidered and metallized Tyvek works are included.
RUTH TABANCAY‘s passion for science led her to study microbiology in college. Following a stint as a hospital laboratory technologist, she went on to medical school. After 11 years in private practice, she left medicine to study art. She is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley; University of California School of Medicine, San Francisco; and California College of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited in numerous regional and national venues. She is a member of Mercury 20 Gallery in Oakland, Vice-President of Pacific Rim Sculptors Group and the Northern California Representative for the Surface Design Association.
