Opening Reception: Friday October 1 from 6-9pm (in conjunction with Oakland Art Murmur) with musical performance by Oakland-based band ELECTROLEUM. Using vintage analog synthesizers deer-caller percussion lap-bass modded effects boxes and loops from studio & field recordings the sounds of mitre saws creaky wooden bridges chickens shipping containers being unloaded at the docks and fragments of casual conversation are woven into the musical textures created.

P.K. Frizzell | Floodplain Series
P.K. Frizzell is interested in the beauty of places struck by disaster. The artist creates her work in somewhat the way a flood would take place: she builds up surfaces with wood used canvas cardboard and materials found around the studio floods them with paint and reworks them until a history and beauty emerge. Finally she floats a shadow of a person animal or tree branch over the surface so that the shadow (which is nothing not even light) has a resonance with the material beneath it like a formerly inhabited place destroyed by flood or fire.
P.K. Frizzell lives and works in Berkeley California. Her mixed-media pieces have been included in exhibitions at galleries throughout California including Rena Bransten Gallery and Upper Market Street Gallery in San Francisco Elizabeth Fortner Gallery in Santa Barbara and the Muckenthaler Cultural Center in Los Angeles. When Frizzell is not engaged in art making she’s busy playing fiddle in the Bay Area bluegrass band "Redwing."

Kathleen King | Tongue & Groove
East Bay artist Kathleen King presents paintings and painted objects in her exhibit Tongue & Groove. The artist corresponds in earnest empathy with materials found in urban streets building sites and dumpsters decorating them with calligraphic gesture and blunt geometry derived from vernacular culture and the vocabulary of Modernism. The work makes a poetic connection to everyday experience and the process of life production as contained in life itself.
Kathleen King was born in Oakland CA and has a BA in Art from UC Berkeley. Her work has been exhibited locally at Pro Arts Hang Gallery and 66 Balmy and is represented in numerous private collections.

Mercury 20 Gallery is pleased to announce Surface & Subtext a group show by gallery artists Jo Ann Biagini Margaret Chavigny Mary V. Marsh and Julianne Sterling. This survey of mixed media work explores ways in which the layering of image abstraction and text creates nuanced records of experience.
Jo Ann Biagini presents new work combining image transfer drawing and collage that merges multi-layered images with refined surfaces. Built up with transparent layers then sanded to subtract and blend these mixed media pieces reveal subtle relationships among juxtaposed elements.
Using a visual vocabulary of interconnection ﾗ nerves pathways waves sinews currents Margaret Chavignyﾒs multi-layered collage paintings uncover symmetries reflections shadows and depth bringing attention to the unseen but powerful sensations of the body within.
Looking for meaning in patterns of everyday life artist Mary V. Marsh records moments and collects artifacts from her daily activities to explore issues of media memory and persuasion. Marsh will show block prints on newspaper from her Everyday Readers series.
Painter Julianne Sterling presents work in oil mixed media collage and graphite on wood panel from Life real and imagined. In this ongoing series the artist draws on images and fantasies from her daily life.
