I work primarily in oil. My paintings, thus far, can be loosely categorized into three areas of focus. The first is an exploration of my experiences as a Chicano living and growing along the Texas-Mexico Border. The second is an investigation of my wavering sense of spirituality and transcendence. The final group of images serves to represent my struggle with my identity as a biologist and neuroscientist.
Through my painting, I hope to share my mind, one rich in experience, critique, humor, and contradiction. Recently, I have been exploring juxtaposition – by placing symbols of vulgarity within a devotional framework, I hope to challenge and dispel the artificial boundaries that we place between them.
